Recovering procrastinators, it’s important to “head” in the right direction. Ever notice when driving a car that the vehicle tends to move in the direction in which your head turns? Whatever our minds dwell on, whatever we hold in our hearts tends to be the direction we will go.
So why do I open the blog each week using a name we don’t want?
The reason I use some form of “procrastinate” in the start of each blog is for search engine purposes. Women google “procrastinator” – but not usually “diligent.” I hope you can look past that nod to technology for the sake of searching sisters and realize our FOCUS should be on “diligent.”
How do we focus in the diligent direction and drive there? This helps me:
A pastor once told our congregation to “Picture a crisp red apple. It’s firm and sweet. Now, don’t think about the apple. Do Not Think About The Apple. Do not think about the apple. Do not think about the apple.”
What are you thinking about?
The apple.
He went on, “Let me tell you about my grandmother’s peach pie. She made the best. The peaches were fresh and juicy. The crust was light. Her warm peach pie was melt-in-your-mouth delicious.”
What are you thinking about?
The peach pie!
When I think “Don’t procrastinate. Don’t procrastinate,” my mind is on procrastination.
The best way to not move in the direction of procrastination – is to think about where I do want to go or be. We want to recognize the truth about our procrastination and what God is delivering us from. We want to cooperate with Him as He works to change us. To cooperate with Him, I focus on what He WANTS me to be rather than on what He does not want.
It’s more than just using a positive term rather than a negative one. It helps me walk free as I look in the direction God is pointing.
I’m learning to say, “Be diligent; do those dishes.” Or “Be diligent – relax a while.”
As we reach out to similarly struggling sisters, we recognize our problem and remember what God is delivering us from. But we FOCUS on what He is changing us into – diligent women who do what needs doing when it needs doing – whether work, play, or rest.
What examples could you share with us of how you focus in the direction you should drive – diligence instead of procrastination?
