Since this recovering procrastinator is missing the “directional chip,” I know I need advice when it comes to driving some place new. It doesn’t bother me to ask for help. The reality of my need is clear and the answer to my need is clear. I ask directions because I want to reach my destination.
I now recognize I am missing the “time awareness chip.” (Maybe missing it is why it’s taken so long to recognize I don’t have it!)
I don’t naturally recognize the time it will take to do a job, when I should start, or what might be involved, etc. So I repeat my procrastination mistakes over and over. That means my feet take me on a path away from the destination I desire.
Also, I thought I could course correct by myself – handle my needs and make improvements as I saw fit.
The truth is I cannot. I have wandered around for years like a lost person behind the wheel who refuses to ask directions. Clearly, I need to turn to someone with the ability see my problem and give wise counsel.
That’s why I asked my husband to guide me in being ready to leave the house with margin. Gratefully, I’ve made progress, but I need to be more consistent to enjoy more peace – and reach the destination I desire. (“The Feet Theme” January 4. “Wagons Ho!” January 11, 2016)
God gave me the ability to DEVELOP time awareness. (I see a little bud growing!) He’s given me His Spirit, a husband, an accountability partner, Christian sisters, and other skilled people from whom I can learn.
But FIRST, I have to stop exalting myself. I have to be humble and accept a learner position.
I read about a very bright CEO who struggles with reading. He’s developed skills that enable him to do what is needed and he’s highly successful. He knows his weakness, so he has gathered around him people whose input he needs for making decisions.
I must be humble to learn to do what needs doing when it needs doing. Praise God, I’m not a computer whose missing chip disqualifies me from use. I am His child. He is growing in me time awareness that is bringing peace into my life. He is using other people to help me change and reach my destination.
In what area do you sense a growing willingness to seek help in reaching your destination?
