Take Me Back? – Abide in the Vine
This summer “look back,” former procrastinators, focuses on my greatest help in becoming diligent. After the Lord and His Word, it’s my accountability partner. She helps me be faithful to the priorities the Lord prompts which means she actually helps me abide in the Vine.
If you object to “somebody knowing my business” or “somebody telling me what to do,” I hear you. No pressure. Some of us, however, recognize that we function well with accountability.
Confession update: I have gotten away from accountability to my partner – because I developed the habit of doing what she helped me do. (Good!) Now, I see myself slipping, so, I’ve asked if she’ll take me back. (Thank you, my friend!)
Why accountability?
God has designed the body of Christ so that we benefit from such relationships. “As iron sharpens iron, also, a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.” Proverbs 27:17 “And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works.” Hebrews 10:24. Also, 1 Thessalonians 5:11, 1 Peter 5:8, Galatians 5:1.
I’ll press to complete something because I don’t want to admit to not doing it. Rejoice! Done. Earthly accountability helps me be faithful to the Lord. My partner helps me put on the new man.
How does this work for us? On Monday I email her my list of priorities for that week, not my whole do list, just the essential few. The next Monday, I email whether or not I did them. “Done” or “Read one article, not two,” or “Did none.” That’s it. I send a new list.
How do you find a partner?
Pray for the right person. She should be willing and able to follow up with you regularly.
Define what you want in an accountability relationship. Are you looking for partnership long term or for a short-term project?
Ask. Give a clear explanation of what you’d like from her. Many people have not done this before. Determine your approach together. Learn as you go what works for you.
Persevere. Don’t be discouraged if first efforts are awkward or unsuccessful. Some people are too busy, some don’t realize the importance of your request, some are too sympathetic to hold you accountable. I experienced each of these; then I hit gold. Try with someone else.
What are some blessings?
- Enjoying freedom and peace as burdens lift quickly
- Staying focused
- Developing more defined and appropriate goals with partner’s input
- Spurring me to set goals I might not otherwise
- Growing humility
- Providing a sister who prays for me in my struggle, shares the joys of accomplishment, and understands disappointments
- Helping me form new habits, become diligent – and fulfill my calling
Consider working with an accountability partner. The freedom and accomplishment are enormous benefits. CEOs of companies utilize this help for themselves. How much more important for a kingdom-building child of God!
