Happy Fall! It’s my favorite time of year, former procrastinators. What’s yours?
I like crisp air, crunchy leaves, snuggly sweaters, reds, yellows, and oranges in the turning trees. Those leaves fall. It all changes. Where there has been green and hot weather, there will soon be bare limbs and cold air. Each season holds a special appeal and brings with it opportunities unique to itself. Each has its challenges and delights. I’ve been thinking lately that seasons – or the larger stages in life – are similar.
The seasons of life are windows of opportunity.
Here, I’m thinking of large seasons or stages in the course of a lifetime – youth, young adult, middle age, and senior years. This month let’s think about how we can say “yes” to God in the particular season we are in. There’s such a temptation to wish away what we have and miss the opportunities God has for us right where we are now.
As a youngster, did you wish to be older so you could do the same cool things your big sister did – stay up late, carry a purse, wear make up?
As a teen did you get antsy to leave home and be on your own?
As a young adult, do you wish you had more time to do what you choose instead of having to juggle work, kids, and household responsibilities?
As a middle aged person, do you long for more freedom and maybe fewer duties with your parents?
As a senior, do you wish for more juice in the joints, more energy, a long sought rest – or maybe a job to do?
It’s easy to focus on what we don’t have and wish for something else.
Instead, let’s focus on gratitude for what we have in the now and seek God about taking advantage of that. If we procrastinate by “wishing away” our days, we’ll find another stage of life draws to a close and we’ve missed it’s unique opportunities.
What do you wish were different about your present stage of life?
