Quickie Fall Declutter – See. Perceive. Act.

5Oct

It’s October, former procrastinators!  Crisp air, bright skies, and the hope of beautiful leaves!  It’s energizing.  Let’s use some of our pep to declutter a few spots.  As I once read, why do we spring clean when we’re heading outdoors?  Let’s fall clean when we’re heading indoors.  Make the cozy months inside more pleasant and functional.

  • A short burst of steam will see us through these easy tasks. Really see each item in your hand and perceive its usefulness to you – honestly.  Then act to use it, enjoy its beauty or sentimentality – or remove it.
  • What pile of stuff have you passed by for months?  Deal with it..
  • Check the closet for summer items you have not chosen to wear for a year or two. Adios.
  • Check the children’s clothing; have teens check theirs.  It’s wonderful to look at what’s hanging there and know you can wear it all.  It’s freeing not to have to shuffle through out-of-season or unwanted clothing to find something suitable for today.
  • Shift summer and winter clothing locations if necessary so warm clothes will be in easy reach.
  • Check drawers for items like unused scarves, socks, pj’s, belts that aren’t as long as they used to be, etc. Those can depart.
  • Clean out bathroom vanities or supply closets of expired tubes and bottles.
  • Remove expired food from the pantry and fridge.  Note what staples you’ll need for the holidays.
  • Try placing items you decide are “on probation” where you will easily see them.  Give yourself say, six weeks, and if you’re not grabbing them to wear or cook, then, so long.
  • Take a look in closets, garage, corners, under beds.  See if you’re storing items that you now know for sure you can get rid of.  Move them out. (Found a lamp.)
  • Are you storing items for adult children that they could remove?  Or for little ones who’ve passed that stage?
  • Did you finish a project but leave residue behind to clear away?
  • Do you have unfinished business laying out that you can wind up?
  • Determine if you need useable space somewhere and shift things around to provide it.  I cleaned clothes from a drawer which left me with half a drawer.  The right side is now my “quick pick up” spot for papers in our bedroom.
  • Notice Christmas dishes or serving pieces that are rarely used even in season.  Give them their final appearance this year or give them away now for others to enjoy.
  • Donate seasonal flowers and other décor that has not appeared in a few years.  When Christmas boxes are out, donate unused pieces.
  • Look over your book shelves and remove the volumes no longer needed.
  • If you’re up for a big job, fall is perfect for tackling the garage or shed.
