It is easy to put off prayer, former procrastinators – especially prayer for our country. It seems an overwhelming task. Because I’ve put off such prayer, I see I have inadvertently become part of the problem. Will you focus with me on praying for our nation? We have enjoyed God’s mercy for so long. Let us humble ourselves so that we recognize His goodness – and repent of our presumption that it will always continue in the forms we have enjoyed.
Let’s pray for the presidential election and for the election of congressmen and senators who will stand for principles of righteousness that benefit a nation. Let’s pray for judges and juries who call evil evil and good good. Let’s pray for families that teach and demonstrate respect for God’s Word, and for schools to teach truth and support families that do the same. Let’s pray for churches that teach truth clearly and boldly. Let’s pray for bills and programs that make provision for right and support it. Let’s pray for every branch of media to speak truth and be influencers for good. Let’s pray for the courage and protection of all who stand for righteousness.
Who determines righteousness? God who is holy. He makes the rules. God determines right and wrong. Legal in man’s eyes does not mean guiltless in God’s eyes.
We cannot negotiate. “Well, God, let’s agree to disagree.” He does not agree.
We can repent of arrogance, presumption, selfishness, inaction.
We can pray scripture such as Proverbs 14:34, Isaiah 5:20, etc.
We can also fast. Fasting helps us be wholehearted in seeking God and in sensitivity to Him. Perhaps He will lead you to fast and pray.
Lord, give us the fortitude to pray with full attention on the state of our nation as you see it; we would rather not think about it. Give us discernment to recognize truth; we would rather not know what is unpleasant. Give us courage to face what is needed; we would rather hope for the best. Give us strength to take action directed by you; we would rather let others handle things. Give us boldness to be righteous; we would rather not be noticed. Give us wisdom in all our conduct; we would rather be carefree. Give us persistence to stand firm; it is easier to drift with the currents.
Lord, give us confidence in your love and sovereignty. Help us remember your purposes are higher and greater than ours. Help us persevere in your strength and power. Keep your truth, your light undimmed in our hearts and minds. Remind us constantly of your faithfulness and help us to be faithful to you. You are our rest, our rock, our Redeemer. The hope we have in You is absolutely certain.
Will you join me in praying diligently for our country?
Thank you Beth for your words of wisdom. Praying lots for our nation.
The fervent prayers of a righteous man – woman – availeth much, Elena. Thank you for praying and encouraging others!
