Merry Christmas, fellow former procrastinators! Rejoice – He is come!
Jesus Himself is the most wonderful gift. He comes from the heart of Holy God to do for us what we can never do for ourselves – reconcile us to Him. He gives us faith to trust Him for cleansing and our eternal destiny. He clothes us in His own righteousness. Therefore we look forward to heaven with confidence.
He has paid the cost of our going to heaven – and He gives us clothes for the journey.
With new life He gives the ability to behave differently than our natural bent. Could my response to this new ability be likened to my response to a gift from my husband or a dear friend?
Let’s say for Christmas I receive a beautiful, expensive sweater. It fits perfectly; the color is complimentary. It’s suitable for every occasion. I’m so grateful! I thank the giver profusely.
Then I put the gift away and do not wear it.
When I see that beautiful sweater in the drawer, I think, “Oh I should wear this sometime.” But I don’t reach for it. I may be out somewhere and realize, “Oh, if I only had on that new sweater.”
Besides that, I keep putting on my dirty worn out sweater. It doesn’t fit well; it doesn’t feel good or look good on me. It’s not appropriate for anywhere I go or anything I do. Sometimes I’m embarrassed to be seen wearing it. Yet it’s still my default apparel of choice. The one who gave me the lovely sweater does not get to see me wearing it – but sees me choosing less.
Why would I put on such a garment as that when I have a new, perfectly fitting, complimentary one to wear just right for every occasion? Is it habit? Forgetfulness? Feeling unworthy? Comfort with my pattern of behavior?
Jesus gives us believers new “behavior clothes” and instructions for wearing them. “Put off concerning your former conduct, [procrastination] the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.” Ephesians 4:22-24.
These righteous clothes Jesus gives us are for now. They are to wear here on earth – for breakfast with the kids, for bed, for the office, for dress up events, and for grubby chores. It thrills Him when we put them on every day.
With our new clothes on, we need never delay another thing out of fear, perfectionism, dislike, confusion, feeling overwhelmed. We are suitably attired to make timely decisions, take action, and do what needs doing when it needs doing. By His grace, we are capable in Him.
We are on the journey to heaven wearing the behavior of the new woman He has made us. What a gift!
Today how will you put on the new woman Jesus has made you? Celebrate and enjoy!
