Momisms – Abide in the Vine

10May

An early morning wakeup, former procrastinators, brought some happy thoughts.  Things my mother used to say – often.  They may have been instructions for us kids or just her observations and commentary.  I think of them often and miss her.

Some momisms we heard frequently:

“Why are you saving that?  You own it.  Use it.”   (Dress, china, whatever.)

“You can’t do everything.  Do what you can.”  (To help someone.)

“Pull the ladder up!”  (Rope ladder to the tree house.  Keep the little kids safe.)

“We can have grass in the future.”  (Our front yard was the kick ball field.)

“Of course, they can come!” (Anybody to eat anytime.)

“You can leave all this here as long as you’re playing with it.  When you stop playing with it, it has to be picked up.”  (Dolls, projects, etc. for all the days they were enjoyed.)

“Call us when you get there.”  (All ages.)

I certainly have used “the standard” momisms and I hear the next generation using them too.  Some bring a groan, some make me think of the truth in them.  They all make me miss Mother.  She was a great lady and a great sport.

And she was the one God chose to be my mom.  I’m truly grateful.

Happy Mother’s Day, ladies.  If you’re a daughter, mom, grandmother, aunt, a nurturer of others, may you know how precious your God-given role is.

It’s been some years since this came out, but I thought it would be fun to laugh today at this collection of mom wisdom or “momisms.”  Smile!
