How can giving up something I value bring freedom? Former procrastinators, the Fourth of July highlights our American freedoms and those who’ve sacrificed so we may enjoy them. Let it remind us our greatest freedom is in Christ. He has set us free from bondage – including free from a bent to procrastinate. Hallelujah!
Pastor Tony Evans, speaking of our current turmoil, reminds us that we must look for the spiritual behind the law, event, politics, whatever the issue. Until we bow to God, we’ll have that issue.
Likewise, in our personal lives. I’m looking behind the difficulties in my life. Am I suffering the results of my own actions? Or lack of action? Of an attitude I’ve adopted? Is there an area I need to surrender to God?
Freedom lies in surrender to Him. Once bound to delay, we’re now free to choose diligence. We set aside self in order to do what needs doing when it needs doing. We stop being busy with a long list of jobs to focus just on the priority. We set aside laundry to cuddle a tearful little one.
Because Jesus has nailed our sins of slothfulness to His cross, we are forgiven. Because He has given us His Holy Spirit, we have the power to recognize and take the action we should. By trading slothfulness for diligence, we gain fulfilled purpose and peace. We use our freedom to walk out our calling.
We do not worship diligence or freedom. We should be walking too close to Jesus to have any other object of devotion but Him. However, we have the privilege as women freed by Christ to be diligent in work, play, and rest as we serve Him. Wave the sparklers!
