Atta Girl!  –  See.  Perceive.  Act.

Our look into problems that plague us, former procrastinators, makes me want to look at some fun things.  Thank you for passing on your tough spots.  Now, what encouragements do you like?  Please let us know.

Progress of any kind makes me smile about moving along.  Sometimes it’s like having a little celebration with the Lord.  Notes in a journal record our successes.

It’s nice when somebody else indicates she sees a difference too – or maybe she sees it before I do.  Let’s commend each other!  We get down about work that remains, and we fail to notice how far we’ve come.  Even getting started is commendable because we’ve stopped delaying and have stepped into diligence.

Recently I made a plan with a family member to help me shop and make decisions.  I’d set the goal of buying some curtains in the first quarter, but I’d been dragging it out – constant looking, no deciding. I’m excited to set myself up for completion.  This appointment do it.

Any way a friend comes along side me is a boost.  Even if she doesn’t advise me or lift a finger, her presence motivates me.  Once a friend sat in our house while I worked in another room.  With her here, I felt I had to move smartly and do the job without delay.  It worked.

Rewards can light a fire under me.  If it’s healthy eating I’m working on, the reward for wise eating should probably be a movie or a new blouse, not a piece of chocolate cake.  But whatever works for you!  I like to work a project, study, etc. with a plan to stop at a certain time then visit a friend, or read.

Alarms are my friends.  I set them to remind me to make calls or be ready for leaving the house.  I set them for photo album work.  Thirty minutes, then a break.  I set them for writing.  It’s a great way to do eye work and intersperse it with large motor tasks like laundry for an eye break and wiggles.

Many of us luv our do lists.  It’s really fun to mark off tasks.  I read another approach I’d like to try:  A comedian said he had to write every day.  It was non-optional.  So, he used a calendar and marked a large red X in the square of each day he wrote.  It was a personal challenge to himself not to break the chain of X’s.  He’d drag himself through some writing at the end of a night just to keep the chain going.  Consequently, he has a large body of material to work with.  And some of it came out of sheer self-control – forcing himself to write before going to bed.

Be sure to post the calendar where it can be seen.  This is great for essentials.  How fun to watch the x’s grow!

Super stupendous secret:  Mini habits make it super easy to mark off X’s!

  1. It is great to get to know yourself in order to achieve goals. I try to mix it up when trying to motivate myself: using an agenda with monthly themes I can paint in gives me a pop of color that makes me want to do things, accountability through groups, cooking for my family motivates me to eat better when I see them enjoy. Also, understanding that there are times when I need more or less encouragement helps me be prepared!

  2. What good ideas, Andrea! Recognizing how we tick is so helpful. Then we can take advantage of our natural bents to help us be diligent. Or, we can do something that helps overcome our natural bent if necessary.
